Where was “Suspect Season 1” Filmed?

The first season of Suspect was commissioned by Channel 4 in September 2021. Filming began the following month, in October 2021. There was a bit of controversy during filming because customers were turned away from a Texaco station in Vauxhall due to the fuel crisis at the time. The show is set in London, so many parts of the city are featured in the series.

Filming in London

Jo McGrath and Walter Iuzzolino talked about filming in London. They said, “We had a brilliant location scouting team who embraced the ambition of the brief with gusto.

“Our idea was to see London through an unusual and different visual prism. This was the opposite of the ‘London from above’ branding of shows like The Apprentice. We wanted ‘London from below.’

“A slightly enigmatic metropolis, devoid of human life and traffic, with huge iconic buildings showing briefly from beneath bridges, side streets, abandoned car parks, etc. We wanted to capture the spirit of Edward Hopper’s paintings and bring them into contemporary London. This would lend the city a palpable emotional character.

“The landscape would become an echo chamber where the emotions of our characters could resonate for increased dramatic depth.”

Director Dries Vos added, “I wanted London to live and breathe through every frame of the show, to exist almost as a character in its own right. But it was very important to me to avoid the traditional picture postcard view of the city.

“We chose to observe the city and its landmarks from skewed and unusual angles, often under the bridges. This way, it would look and feel like an altered and more abstract version of a place strongly etched in viewers’ imaginations.”

West London

Actress Niamh Algar, who plays Nicola, mentioned filming in West London. She said, “We filmed in this amazing apartment in west London. It felt like a place I hadn’t seen done before in London.

“Dries’s idea was to show London in a way we haven’t really seen before on British TV. He has a very personal vision of London.”

Unique Locations

Actor Sacha Dhawan described one of the unique filming locations. He said, “We filmed in an amazing space that is actually part of a Thames Water sewage plant! Not the most glamorous of locations, but it looked fantastic on screen. Dries and our exceptional Director of Photography, Brecht, really brought the space to life with the cinematography.”

Filming at Texaco in Vauxhall

Last year, James Nesbitt was seen at a Texaco garage in Vauxhall, south London, filming for Suspect. The crew took over the garage, but this happened during the seventh day of the UK’s fuel crisis.

Angry drivers, struggling to find fuel, were frustrated by the garage’s closure. An ambulance driver in the queue for fuel told The Sun, “At what point is Nesbitt’s new show more important than NHS staff and other desperate motorists filling up tanks?

“I was here last night and could not fill up. There were people queuing for hours. When we were turned away, a lot of drivers got angry, shouted abuse, and sounded their horns.”

The garage owner, named Suki, said they had planned to allow customers to use the pumps, but the till system went down, adding that it was a “coincidence.”

Suki said, “We could not cancel filming and open the remaining pumps because we were contractually obliged to allow the film crew in.”

This is how Suspect was filmed in various locations in London, creating a unique and intriguing setting for the series.
