Trivia and Facts
- The movie is based on the book “Island of the Blue Dolphins” by Scott O’Dell. The book and the film were inspired by the real-life story of a woman who lived alone on one of the Channel Islands for eighteen years in the early 1800s.
- This woman was unfortunately left behind by missionaries and died of dysentery seven weeks after she was rescued and brought back to mainland. She is buried in the graveyard of the Santa Barbara Mission in California.
- There is also a peculiar detail about the main character’s appearance. Karana’s hair doesn’t grow longer even after she has been on the Channel Islands for 18 years. But in reality, hair growth has a terminal length, beyond which it doesn’t grow. The length depends on the individual.
- The movie also had a notable quote from Karana about the dog, Rontu, which goes: “Your eyes are like those of a fox and as I don’t trust a sly fox I do not trust you either dog. That would be a good name for you. I will call you Rontu. It means fox eyes.”
